Glastonbury 2009 avoided the worst of the recession with traders
having a better trading year than many anticipated and feared. I am
sure that 2010 - our fortieth anniversary of the first Glastonbury
- will be another record breaker. If you want to join us at Worthy
Farm please complete the application form below and submit it
online, with supporting photographs.
Applications must be made before 3rd January
2010. You will be informed if you are to be offered a site
during February, with payment due by 1st April.
Traders more than played their part in making Glastonbury 2009
such a success. The review with the licensing body was really
positive with most aspects of safety in the markets and hygiene
being reported upon favourably. Two particular issues were raised
which they plan to look at closely with traders in 2010 - namely
Noise at Work and Working at Height.
The Festival has been proactive for some years in addressing
Noise at Work issues. Too much loud noise can
affect anyone who works in a loud environment. In practice this
includes traders and bar staff and others working in arenas and
near venues. When assessing the noise risk, traders need to think
of all the possible ways to avoid harmful exposure of staff and
should consider: using job rotation to avoid excessive exposure
time, providing a quiet rest area, and ensuring staff have access
to proper hearing protection. You need to consider what information
you provide to staff regarding noise hazards and protective
measures.
Working at Height is still very much on the
local authority agenda, so make sure you bring a secure ladder if
your staff need to carry out any work at height and that they take
all appropriate precautions. If they have to put up banners, or
lights please ensure they follow sensible good practice.
One of the few down points for me this year was the number of
delivery vehicles that arrived on site without prior approval from
the Festival Office, some of which I would not have approved as
they carried stock that was available from wholesalers on site.
In 2010 deliveries that turn up at the gates, without prior
approval, will not be allowed on site.
Again we are asking food traders to identify a product
which is their 'best buy'. This is not necessarily the
cheapest item on the menu, although it may well be, but it could be
a quality plated meal, or a particularly large portion size, which
are great value for money. We will promote "best buy" on our
website and at Information points on site, and will be asking you
to identify on your menu boards which is your 'best buy'.
